2020-FUTURE-MACHINA

How might media contribute to practices of futurology – the study and extrapolation of current economic, social and cultural trends in order to imagine possible and plausible futures?

ED

“ED” is fictional short film for the final alternative futures project in the FUTURE MACHINA studio. It explores the future of education equality through a fictional machine learning education device; inspired by current developments of AI driven tutoring and issues regarding current access to education, an issue I feel has been globally highlighted due to the current pandemic.

ED stars my housemates, they are not actors and I am extremely grateful for their help, particularly Tré, who plays the dance student Carmen. Production of this short film and this semester played out during COVID19 restrictions, this proved to be quite a struggle for me. I produced from home with very little film gear and, being a fairly audio based media maker, ultimately feel I’ve learnt a lot from the hardships, such as my basic Adobe After Affects modelling, something I had barely touched or considered prior to this course.

Finally, I am incredibly grateful for the work Cat and my fellow students put into this studio to create a great environment to learn, discuss and experiment; despite the circumstances of this semester.
