2020: DOCUMENTING THE ENVIRONMENT

The Practice of Recycling

Synopsis: A bored student explores the Practice of Recycling in Australia. After growing up seeing pro-environment messages around him, he takes to the internet to sate his curiosity. However, the young student soon discovers things are not as effective and ‘green’ as he had previously thought…

Director’s Statement:
When I first started this course, I didn’t think I would be doing anything like this. This is so far out of my comfort zone so I hesitated a lot in doing this project. I’m glad I could see it through to the end, but I also don’t think I’ll be trying something like this again any time soon. No matter how uninterested my character seems in this video, everything that he learns, I learned from doing that video. In that regard, it was fascinating to see what is actually going on with our waste. The development of this idea was kept very broad and loose, it was nice to see it evolve and change as I continued to work on it.

How can we make documentary which engages in new ways of representing and experiencing the environment?
Speaking from my own personal experience, I don’t think I really brought anything new to the table. I don’t think I engaged anyone in a “new way.” Honestly, I think the best that we can do is make the film that we want to make. Whatever you do, odds are plenty of people have done it before. However, no matter who does it after, their individuality still shows in their film. I hope my individuality is able to shine through mine.
