‘Betrayed’ – Miranda Hatzimoisis

As the end of semester is approaching as well as finishing deliberate film, it has made me realise how interesting yet enjoyable this subject has been. Coming into the semester, I thought that I had a thorough understanding in the area of film as I had experience over the years from VCE media, my first year of uni and as well as my own learnings on personal projects. However, when coming into the first few weeks of deliberate film, I quickly realised that there was a whole lot more for me to learn in both theory and personal skills within filmmaking that I didn’t even know existed. The first thing that I gained in the studio was the ability to efficiently edit my footage on premiere pro using the keyboard shortcuts. Learning these skills so early on in the semester really assisted me in speeding up the editing process for all of my work throughout the rest of the semester. As well as this, I gained a wider understanding in the different types of film, such as the animatics, colour grading and also script writing. These were some of the factors within filmmaking that I was not very confident with as I had never really had any experience with them, however, over the course of the past 12 weeks I have been able to gain these skills which are going to be used within my future work in filmmaking.

Collaboration

Another factor within filmmaking that I have gained a greater understanding and thoroughly enjoyed was the ability to collaborate with my peers. Prior to uni going online due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exercises in studios were a great way for all of us students to collaborate together. As we were all from different courses and each had different experiences and backgrounds within filmmaking, the collaboration within groups allowed each of us to put in our own creativity into the exercises we were given, such as the first ‘What’s in The Box’ exercise. Working on this project with my peers gave us all an insight into how we each work, assisting each other with all the production aspects which I thought was a real upside to the whole process as we were all learning new skills from one another.

Pre-Production

The script I chose was titled ‘Betrayed’, which I thought prior to reading it was going to be a suspenseful script to work with due to the name, and in fact, it was. I created 3 of my own script versions to the original, which were the camera mark-up, a director’s mark-up, as well as a sound mark-up. These 3 scripts really assisted me in getting a secure overview in how I was going to produce the scenes when it came to filming and was a great way to have all of my mental notes written down so I wouldn’t forget them during the production stage.

Production

The production stage of my script went extremely well. Due to issues over our group’s zoom, I decided to do complete mine with my own cast and camera. I used 3 of my cousins and shot it on my Canon 60D camera with the assistance of a tripod. During filming there were few constraints, those being, a little confusion within the plot of the script for my cast, the use of only house lighting and no man to play the character of Martin. However, I effectively overcame these issues with my cast and thought they ended up doing a fairly good job which I reflected on within the completion of my first rough cut.

Post-Production

After my experimenting, I decided that the original rough cut that I created for the betrayed script was the one that I wanted for my final film. Although there are minor constraints within the beginning of the film, I think these are all little faults that were primarily there due to the script I was working with. For the final, I did end up cutting down the ‘betrayed’ title at the start just so it made flowing into the footage a little more dramatic. Overall, I was very happy with all of the work that I had completed over the last 8 weeks in deliberate film and am very excited to use all of these skills within my future filmmaking.
