‘BETRAYED’ final compilation & reflection – Nat Lauriola

The script I chose for my project is titled ‘Betrayed’ and features 3 characters – Franca, Emily and Martin. Franca becomes suspicious and worried when her partner, Martin, hasn’t come home that night and she receives an odd phone call from his contact details. It is then revealed that Emily has been staying with Martin, secretively.

I really wanted to capture a contrast between the characters with both Martin and Emily appearing to be sinister and ‘bitchy: , and Franca to be innocent and anxious – good vs evil you could say.

For my final assessment, I created a compilation of all the tests and experiments I’ve worked on through the studio leading up to this final assessment. These tests were a great learning process and challenge to see what I could come up with creatively with the current limitations that Covid-19 permits. I wanted to cover a range of tests, such as lighting, post-prod. work like vfx and colour grading, and work on some different camera framing tests. Majority of these experiments and tests were conducted over our groups zoom calls, which allowed us to direct each other and use the live recording feature to capture our video and save it straight to our computers.

It was definitely helpful to me to be organised and have some sort of pre-production stage. This meant I created shot-lists, floor plans, gathered location stills for set ideas, and planning the costuming and colour schemes. All of this planning really assisted me when taking part in the zoom recordings as I could simply refer to my documents to guide me on what to do next.

Deliberate Film was a great studio, while it sucked that we couldn’t be in the classroom face to face with each other, I believe the positives outweighed the negatives. We could all push our creative boundaries and step outside the box when it came to our usual learning techniques, which we become comfortable with. We were all somewhat on the same level with our technology access as we knew it wasn’t about having the most expensive gear and shooting with our fancy dslr cameras. Watching back on what we created, it goes out the window that we are all just shooting on our laptop webcams or phones for the most part.
