Stop Laughing This is Serious – ABC iView

Thanks Gabby for this great suggestion.  Stop Laughing This Is Serious is a 3 part series about Australian comedy, featuring interviews with numerous established comedy performers.  It looks like episode 2 & 3 are still available online, so it would be great for you to check this out and see if you can get some ideas or inspiration.

A particular point stood out to me early on in Episode 2, during the segment on Kath & Kim.  Magda Szubanski suggests that Kath & Kim couldn’t have existed without the legacy of programs like Home & Away and Neighbours before it, providing a basis for representing suburban life.  This comment alludes to the mastery of parody; the way that the comedic form plays on themes and characters with great accuracy and observation.

We should consider how this functions in the web series form – a form that could not exist without the internet.  This is obvious, but rather than technology, think about internet culture, and how this permeates and shapes the language, performance and aesthetic of web series comedy.  What are some examples of web series content that could not have existed before the internet age, and what elements of them are unique to this context?
