Kuleshov, L. (trans. Levaco, R.) 1974 ‘Art of the Cinema’, Kuleshov on Film: Writings of Lev Kuleshov, University of California Press, London UK

In the chapter Art of the Cinema, Kuleshov deems montage to be the foundation of cinema as, “…montage is the organisation of cinematic material.” (48) Kuleshov discusses how montage is primarily used as a continuity device apropos to narrative structure as it allows parallel and simultaneous actions in a linear sequence. Kuleshov astutely employs a case study between American and Russian films to outline the differences in the quantity of cuts due to themes/genres however the similarities in how, “…the source of filmic impact upon the viewer lies within the system of alternating shots, which comprise the motion picture.” (47) This chapter supplements my research on shot-to-shot cutting and extends further upon the montage as the necessary spearhead of direction in films. Upon completing research into Kuleshov, sources by or regarding Pudovkin and Eisenstein will further my research on the cut and relations between shots in editing.
