Feneley Dustin, “Post Production: Editing”, Short and Sweet: the Art of Short Narrative Film, Issue 53, Screen Education, Focus on Filmmaking

This article by Dustin Feneley, talks about the production and post-production of short films. The part of editing talks about the role of an editor and the process of editing. It says that the script is written three times – the first is the script itself, the second is while the shoot and the third is during editing. Editing gives you the most tangible, visceral and immediate opportunity to rewrite films. It says that one needs to have the objectivity and courage to access the materials one has captured on the shoot and to acknowledge when things aren’t working or ‘playing’ the way it was imagined. It says that editing is full of uncertainty and if one approaches the process of editing as a means of experimentation and of continuous trial and error, one will seize the opportunity to sculpt your film into a leaner, stronger and more redefined work of art.  Lastly it says that one needs to assess the footage shot by fresh eyes which is a crucial trait of an editor and let go of the fight to retain everything that is shot – meaning one has to have the courage to ‘kill your darlings’, if as a whole, the film benefits from their omission.
