Eisenstein, Sergei, and Jay Leyda. Film Form; Essays in Film Theory. New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1949. Print.

The chapter, “Method’s of Montage” is one of the essays that demonstrate

Eisenstein’s film theory of montage editing in film. The authors cover the basis of metric,

rhythmic, tonal, over tonal and intellectual montage. They clearly state each montage

using examples from films. Eisenstein describes the rhythmic montage and uses the

example of the Odessa steps. In this example, one can argue that metrical montage is

perfectly suitable for the marches shown in the Odessa steps, but the scene was more

complex and thus needed the rhythmic montage. After reading this chapter, one can

easily reevaluate their thoughts on a film and the editing purposes of each cut through

Eisenstein’s theory of montage editing.
