Eisenstein, S. (trans & ed Leyda, J.) 1949 ‘Methods of Montage’, Film Form: Essays in Film Theory, Harvest, London UK

In Eisenstein’s chapter Methods of Montage, he intensely scrutinises the functions behind the montage – solidifying a model of Eisenstein’s ‘Methods of Montage’. Eisenstein extensively describes his notions of: the metric montage, the rhythmic montage, the tonal montage, the overtonal montage and the intellectual montage. To augment his pedagogies, Eisenstein details clear historical film examples to ensure credibility. This chapter is extremely useful to my research on the cut and the montage in editing as Eisenstein proposes informative and advanced theories. There are no clear limitations to this text as it is written factually, is unbiased and is reliable. This chapter propels my research further as I aim to develop an understanding of the motivations behind the editor – both by experience through editing and subjectively.
