This article gives a detailed analysis of Walter Murch’s Rule of Six that directly relates to the important features of every cut. It details what is the most important element of the footage, and what to prioritise whilst cutting. The article also provides the reader with actual footage of Walter Murch presenting to a crowd, in which he describes his Rule of Six.

This article analyses why certain elements of the shot are more important than others. Boyd stresses that Murch’s priority whilst editing is to keep the emotion of the scene true to the story. He states that if one thing is not to be jeopardised, it is emotion. Boyd then goes on to analyse the other 5 important elements of cuts and shots, detailing why it is that Murch believes they are more or less important than the others.

Whilst this article is somewhat basic, it does analyse and explain the important elements of Murch’s rule of six, which is a key concept when considering the choices editors have to make. It places emphasis on the editor’s ability to understand a scene or sequence as an individual stream of footage, and as a part of a larger picture, which moulds and changes the audience’s expectations and experience of the film.
