Bordwell, D. & Thompson, K., 2013 ‘The Relation of Shot to Shot Editing’, Film Art: An Introduction, McGraw-Hill Education, NY US

In this chapter, esteemed film theorists Bordwell and Thompson discuss the various types of relations between shots as well as continuity editing. Through detailed explanations and film examples, their pedagogies on Graphic, Rhythmic, Spatial and Temporal relations are reliable and unbiased. Discussing similarity and contrast as aspects of relations within each of these categories extends upon this notion further as non-continuity editing is briefly considered. This chapter is extremely useful to my research on film editing and the cut between shots as Bordwell and Thompson write in great detail about their shot to shot editing theories. Throughout the chapter, other film theorists’ theories are discussed including Lev Kuleshov’s the Kuleshov Effect – where the combination of two shots brings forth greater meaning than each in isolation – therefore, more research is needed into developing an understanding of the theories inspiring Bordwell and Thompson. This chapter will be reviewed alongside further research to develop a stronger understanding of the possibilities of relations between shot-to-shot editing.
