Sargeant, A. Vsevolod Pudovkin: Classic Films of the Soviet Avant-Garde. London: I.B. Tauris, 2000. Print.

This text gives great insight into Pudovkin and his approach to montage theory and film practise. It explains that Puduvkin states film should be built, rather than simply shot. Both Pudovkin and Eisenstein were taught the importance of editing by Kuleshov and both have very similar techniques and styles. Pudovkin focused on eliciting dramatic emotion, using montage to give his audience a point of identification, something for them to relate and empathise with. This differs from Eisenstein’s main goals with intellectual montage, which aims to elicit a political or social commentary. This is an incredibly relevant and insightful piece.
