The article mainly analyzes three films: Le Ballon Rouge, Une Fee pas comme les autres, and Le Rideau cramoisi. Le Ballon Rouge and Une Fee pas comme les autres demonstrate the virtues and the limitations of montage in totally opposite ways. In Une Fee pas comme les autres, Jean Tourane was trying to make a Disney picture with live animals, and he did his best to get the animals to stay in a specific spot where he placed them for the duration of the take. And the use of montage strengthens the impression that the animals act like human being. Le Ballon Rouge is different from Une Fee pas comme les autres, it did not depend on montage totally, it involved montage accidentally. In Le Rideau cramoisi, montage was used within well-defined limits, otherwise it may threaten the ontology of the cinematographic tale. In addition, for some kind of narrative films, montage is not used in order to demonstrate the full motion.
This article talks about montage through analyzing three main films and mentioning other films as well, which is useful to my research. It provides me examples that when and how to use montage.
