  1. This article states Eisenstein and his way of editing, montage. Sergei Eisenstein is a student of Kuleshov’s. His film Battleship Potemkin in 1925 was a huge propaganda film back then. The famous Odessa Step scene is a representation of intellectual montage with rhythmic edits and the use of close-ups for dramatic effect. There are over 150 cuts in the 7 minutes’ scene. However to audience, it doesn’t matter. The short cuts create a tension that is built up with time frame moving. To Eisenstein, montage is the way of editing that against classic Hollywood continuity system.

This article introduces Eisenstein and his specific way of editing and his famous film Battleship Potemkin and the famous scene, Odessa Step scene. It also gives few examples of similar editing way of Odessa Step scene in other films. These short cuts in the scene give audience plenty of information. It is even too much to catch up. Then a kind of feeling or tension starts to build up in audience’s sight. In the end, it will confuse or overwhelm the audience.

Eisenstein is again mentioned in another article. He is a very important theorist and filmmaker in montage. So I will focus on his work and paper more in order to know more about montage. Also the examples make me have a further understanding on fast-pace montage.
