  1. This article looks at the relationship between Vertov’s writing’s and theories, and their application in his films throughout history. Lawton breaks down Vertov’s writings with rational critique and a broad understanding, and uses these understandings to interpret Vertov’s films.
Particular focus is places upon rhythmic montage, and the proposition of film being a sequential poem of sorts. Lawton also goes on to compare and contrast Eisenstein with Vertov, whilst also noting Eisenstein’s critique of him also, with reference to essay’s written by Eisenstein. The article does a good job of using primary source examples from Vertov’s films, in a scene by scene break down style to reinforce and uncover Vertov’s theories.
