  1. This piece by Susan Hayward briefly talks about the history of film. The author begins with the debut of silent films and how they progressed and then moves on to talk about the introduction of editing and montage from Sergai Eisenstein and Lev Kuleshov.

What makes this piece different to the others is that Hayward writes about the Association of Revolutionary Cinematography (ARC) which Eisenstein, Kuleshov, Dziga Vertov and Esfir Shub. This groups aim was to establish and maintain ideological control over the making of films. Members of the group were most of the leading Soviet film makers. Hayward references Soviet Union films and cinema throughout this piece, especially whilst she discusses editing.
