This article takes a look at Algorithmic Editing, a term first coined by Lev Manovich in an artist statement for Soft Cinema in 2002, used to describe the process of a computer making editing decisions based upon algorithms and scientific methodology, rather than a creative process exercised by a human artist themselves.
The article makes interesting points about Algorithmic Editing existing previously to Manovich’s interpretation, as Soviet film makers such as Eisenstein and Vertov were experimenting with a formal style of editing that was based around Rhythm and Montage, in the 60’s and 70’s.
The article goes on to demonstrate the power of Algorithmic Editing as a medium, as well as it’s limitations and potential consequences practically and with a creative endeavour in mind.
