In this website, Elements of CINEMA, montage section, it investigated how montage works especially when the theme is a trip. It provides two video examples to show the difference between a slow-paced montage and a fast-paced one. In the slow-paced one, they used still pictures, sepia tone, slow-paced editing, orchestral music and no dialogue. In the fast-paced one, they used digital video footage, fast-paced editing with quick shots and many cuts, house music and narration. In addition, it also point out that montage doesn’t make audience feel. It makes audience see and know. Montage may has the simple function as text cards, but what makes a difference is that montage is more exciting, stimulating and cinematic. Theme of love is not usually shot with a montage.
This article is very interesting and different. It point out lots of new things about montage. For instance, it provides two videos with very contrasting styles of montages to compare slow-paced and fast-paced trip montage. I get lot of senses about montage like different rhythm of editing, different style of music, different frame, etc. However what is mentioned blew causes some doubts of mine. From my point of view and experience of watching montage clips, audience must feel something from it, not just knowing things. Montage e can do more than informing. Audience make association through montages, in the end, the power of making association and imagination make them have new thoughts about the entire composition of the film. What’s more, character can fall in love during a montage. I just read a reading mentions that the entire relationship is covered in a montage. In fact, I’ve seen lots of films using montage to show the development of a relationship.
This resource provides two interesting montage clips that I can learn tips from. Also it makes me re-considerate the cinematic elements of a montage. It makes me wonder how to bring out the power of montage shots, far more than just to inform.
