In order to situate his exploration of the film medium Chen commences his piece by discussing the history of film editing, describing its birth in actualities before becoming conventional of film, particularly narrative films. On a number of occasions Chen mentions the need to increase cinema’s audience sizes. If this necessity of a larger audience for film is the impetus for his research it’s never confirmed but rather implicated. He does however explicitly identify the power of editing to reshape existing content to convey a new narrative or thematic message. This provides a link to his research into multiple plot films in which audiences share in the role of editor, given agency to direct the narrative of the film they watch. The examples of multiple plot films Chen uses were comprised of the same elements with the point of difference being the perpetrator of the causal chain. Essentially all of the films arrived at the effect after a variety of different causes. Although the ending was always uniform, audiences who had witnessed unique narrative arcs would read it differently.
