Peter Atkins

Peter Atkins is a leading Australian contemporary artist, whose career spans more than 20 years. He was born in Sydney and studied at the National Art School in Sydney. He currently lives and practices in Melbourne, and is represented by Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne and Greenaway Gallery Adelaide. His work is represented in major galleries around Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria. He has been awarded a plethora of awards, and his work is exhibited around the globe.

Peter’s work is inspired by everyday objects, which he re-interprets into abstract forms. He collects materials which become the inspiration for his work, for example his Polaroid Project (2014) which was based on boxes of polaroid cameras he had collected. It’s important to him that his artwork triggers recognition with audiences – a shared memory and nostalgia. He describes his work as ‘readymade abstraction.’

His practice is project based, meaning he works on and develops one project before moving on to the next. Importantly, his work is handmade by himself, in order to create tangible and personal work.
