How the Raise of Great Firewall and Fall of Tor will impact us

The Great Firewall is only the slight glance at the black hole of the legal, regulatory and technical mechanisms of the internet censorship in China, but this one gear has been doing better and better at standing in the way between the Internet from China and from the rest of the world, which is the core component to prevent Chinese netizens from seeking out foreign websites in order to keep its domestic control in place.

However, according to the Washington Post, experts said that the Great Firewall which may be the world’s biggest censorship and Internet monitoring system not only affects netizens in China but also becoming a potential concern for netizens around the world. As the systems has its limits and are not able to monitor every website that may be accessed in China, the government took its action to put the IT services from foreign companies in the banking and telecoms sectors under its control by publishing new rule forcing them to use only services they can monitor. At the first place, this has raised the trust issue between customers worldwide and well-aware international brands (Denyer. S 2015).

On the other side, as Gmail is no longer able to be accessed in China which affect on large groups of Chinese international students and future students willing to study overseas, knowing more and more information and cyber communication platforms are being shut down, such as Line (blocked since 1 July 2014) and Instagram (blocked since 29 September 2014), making a decision of whether they are migrating to other countries or going back to China will be much more easier – as Chinese students have all been taught that Mao encouraged everyone to “seek truth from facts”, and the Great Firewall is the exact problem of establishing the facts in China. For Mao, facts existed objectively but for the rest of us, the reliability of the Internet Censorship in China is an ongoing problem for any attempt to “seek truth” (Abbott, 2004).
