Week 2: Library

Role of the library / how you would go about doing research for this studio

Not going to lie, I’ve been in the Media & Comm course for three years now and have probably only set foot in the library for research two or three times. The default for all the research I’ve had to do for previous essays and group assignments have stemmed from pretty general RMIT library search and Google searches. For this semester I’d like to make it a goal to use more effective skills to find more specific & targeted information. The Carlton library is such a great resource for media students, and I’d like to explore the collections it holds. This studio is also a challenge to branch out from my current routine of searching for the basic journal articles in the library search, and explore other forms of research. I think the library would be a great source of traditional media which I don’t often bother to use; it’d be a good practice to go back to borrowing physical books and find tangible artefacts such as old newspaper articles to help with the exploration of the role of old vs. new media. On the contrary, I’d like to think about research for new media outside the box of social media, to explore other forms such as interactive installation and livestreaming. It’ll also be interesting to try to represent digital media research such as the concept of the cloud in a tangible way.

3 things that represent the library:

1. Corridors of books – this is the image I think of if the word library is mentioned

.

2. CD’s – for me, libraries hold connotations of older/traditional media

.

3. Cubicles – study spaces & quiet
