For the final documentary, we change the topic as immigration. Fay and me do not want to emigrate and we choose to study media just for interesting, so we do not understand why there has so many Chinese people they come to Australia to study just for immigration. So we make this documentary to explore what those people’s opinions.

The main participants are: 1. David, a 22 years old boy  and he is studying electrical engineering in RMIT. 2. Katherine, a girl, she is studying preschool education in Monash. 3.Lili, a 30-year-old lady, she is already emigrated and she worked for a University as an accountant. And we think about some interview questions:

What’s your major? Is it a immigration major?

  • Why you choose to study in Melbourne/Australia?
  • You came here for emigrate or after you came here then you want to emigrate?
  • What do you wan to do in the future?
  • Your parents want you to emigrate or just you want to emigrate? Why you are so persistent?
  • How will you emigrate? Through what efforts?
  • Do you want to stay here or you will come back to China after several years?

And for the visualization, we will interview each of the three and use B-roll footage like close-ups of hands and also ww will use the voice over. We want to divide it into 3 parts: the boy’s part accounts for 50% of the total and the two girls account for 50%. Also, we will record some clips like David study with his parter and he goes to supermarket or he plays piano, like this.

About the final project, I want to make a documentary about a chef.

His name is Edwardo and he came to Australia when he was 15 years old. When he finish the high school education, he started to learn cooking and he got Commercial cookery certificate 3 and 4/ Asian cookery certificate 3/ Patisserie certificate 3. And now he’s learning dessert at Le Cordon Bleu. He loves cooking, he thinks when he makes food and shows it to others, it can take happiness and satisfaction to others; whether it is Chinese food or dessert, people who like this food will feel happy, as chef , their food are enjoyed by others, they will be happy too. I think it is a good story.

Also, he made a small restaurant at his house. People with 3 to 5 could buy some vegetable and meat to his house and he cooks for them, then they eat together. He thought in this way he could practice his cooking skill and get more friends, he would like to do it. I think he’s so cool. So I want to make a documentary about his life. I wanna film some clips like he goes to Market to buy some vegetables and he cooks food. Also, I will interview him and use the voice over.

Before I watched “A bite of China”. It’s a TV documentary produced by CCTV, China, and the first large-scale documentary in China. It presents all kinds of delicious food, and “A bite of China” will show the flavor of life of ordinary Chinese people, show the story of people and food, through food to see the community. And I will use some skills from it to show the food.

About the final project we want to talk about a Chinese couple’s life in Australia. They came to Australia for their daughter and grandson. Their daughter has emigrated to Australia and got married and had children, but because their daughter is too busy working, they don’t even have time to cook for their children. So the old couple can only come to Australia from China to help their daughter to look after their grandson. But the old couple cannot speak English so they are so difficult to live in Australia. Also, their grandson can hardly speak Chinese so that it is difficult for the old couple to chat with their grandson.

Also, we want to show the generation gap from grandparents and grandson. They also have culture conflict so they sometimes feel confused or boring. They want to come back to China but they also need to take care of their grandson, so the old couple are so entanglement now. We want to show the culture conflict and the generation gap to audiences. In media 2, we made a documentary about a Chinese old man who works at QVM, and he also feel lonely although he came to Australia for 25 years.

Thus, we think we could make this documentary for those who have same problems. For me, my parents do not want me to stay at Australia, because they think it’s so far.So we think this topic can cause a lot of resonance and reflection.

Firstly, I watched a Chinese documentary named Still Life(2006) and this documentary was directed by Zhangke Jia. This documentary depicts two men and women from shanxi to the three gorges. I watched it twice. The first time, I watched without pause, the second time, I analyzed every detail. Zhangke Jia is so, every shot is so expressive, every dialogue that let people thinking.
In addition to the storyline, I want to talk about the footage. It has he fuzzy opening, people who live on the bottom of the boat, they play cards, smoke, daze, fortune telling, hot weather, and finally stand in the stern of Han Sanming(leading character). More than one Chinese director tried to use extras and the original performance of the underlying concern, but either with a fairy tale ending to wipe away the tears out of the cinema audience in the light red wine green to forget those suffering. From the perspective of God or compassion to the audience that he overlooks, the watch is a kind of compassion and charity. Jia Zhangke’s film, however, threw the ambiguous concern aside and told you the fact that, whether you saw it or not, you were moved. There are people like this in your life.

Then, I think I can change the final work topic and work with fay together. Fay talked the story to me and I thought it can be a big question nowadays. Many Chinese go to Australia to study or work and they want to stay in Australia, but their parents are often the most difficult, they can’t discourage their children to pursue good life, and no way to live in unfamiliar places, they even cannot speak the language. Thus, we think we could show the reality thing.

Documentary is story, it tells story but it is also a story. When I doing the reading, I found that it is easy to tell a story sometimes but it is hard to be a story. So a lot of things can affect the quality of a documentary. To make a goo documentary, I guess I need to watch more documentary seriously and find the inspiration and achieve- ments of others. Also, every documentary has their own meaning, to find the differences. Last week I watched a Chinese documentary named Masters in Forbidden City. This is the 90th anniversary of the National Palace Museum of the gift documentary and it is only a short three sets, each set of 52 minutes.

This is the only large documentary film that has so far taken into the story of the National Palace Museum. I watched the third episode, it is talked about painting, calligraphy  repair and copy. As I know, this is the first time in the documentary or film to show a world-class Chinese cultural relics repair process and technology to show the original state of cultural relics and collection status.

In my opinion, watching a documentary like this has a great meaning for people(for Chinese). Before this, people may not understand this aspect and do not care about it. This documentary let people understand that the difficulties and necessary to repair cultural relics, so that people have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. Thus it has a great meaning.

In recent year, probably most people are not interested in independent documentary. “Indecent social-issue documentaries, long a neglected and unfashionable category in film, have more recently been burnished with a not-al-ways-deserved reputation for trustworthiness- or at the least gutsiness and contrarian wisdom.”(Patricia A, 2014) One year ago, I watched a Chinese independent documentary named ‘Bumming in Beijing’, which is filming from the beginning of 19881 and finishing editing in 1990. It is about”North drift family” and that group was called”blind flow”, but now crown to the title is “independent artist”. “Bumming in Beijing” is definitely not a form of people to see a happy documentary, it tested the patience of people, to test whether the audience is willing to listen to their voices. In other words, watching this documentary requires a lot of in traction between the two, otherwise we can not understand why they are not proud of the blind but enjoy the same blind life.

The time are changing so the mind of public are changing. People began to try to accept such a documentary, also began to understand the mainstream media. However, it is only a few people. In addition to those who are interested in this part and those who are study of this part, others may not be very concerned about it.

In this course, basically I like documentary and I want to learn how to make a good documentary as well. Last semester, our group in media2 studio did a project that we made a documentary. We tells a story about a Chinese old man who works on Queen Victoria Market and he sells vegetable with his daughter. Then I thought it was so great to tell somebody’s story by using the documentary. Also, I watched some documentaries in China before, like the bite of China. It was so popular in China when it broadcasted. So I’m interested in the documentary and I want to learn what is the documentary, how to make a good documentary, how can I come up with more different ideas.

I know that the documentary is reality and tell the true story and I guess it can also record our life and give us a good memory. Learning how to make a documentary then I can make my own documentary to record my life, this is what I really want. For example, I can use my skills to make a very good wedding documentary for my sister. On the other hand, learning documentary could better understand the society or let the public know this society better. I also want to tell the life of the bottom people of Chinese society.

Then, in this course, I also want to learn the skills of making documentary, like filming and editing. Before I did some filming and editing work but I think it isn’t enough and I need to learn more. Thus, this is what I want to learn about documentary.

I like documentary.

A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record.(Documentary film (2017) in Wikipedia. Available at:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_film (Accessed: 24 January 2017).)

When I first watched documentary film, I was thinking if this film was telling the reality. I think a lot of people watching documentary is also have this question. Documentary is based on real life creation material to true story for performance object, and carries on the artistic processing and presentation, in order to show true to nature, and real cause people to think about a movie or television art form. The core of the documentary for real. Now I want to talk about how to shot a good documentary.

The choice of material is very important. I have seen a documentary before, shooting a sauna. Sauna just rise of small and medium-sized cities in that time, so the director went to a sauna and shot the rest room. There were more than three hundred people, and they spent the night there. And then the director was very strange, why they do not go back to home ? By visiting them, the director found that they are a diverse group, particularly interesting, some people want to  win business, some people need to work there and need to go back the next day. 30 dollars to take a shower and sleep one night, a person feels cheap and he doesn’t want to live hotel. Still have a plenty of suspicion wife tired, don’t want to go home, or quarreled, anyway, that’s a hiding place. The director said that he took a lot of special wonderful visit.

Thus, the material is very important, it’s can show that the real life of public or some special things. Also, good material could attract audiences.
