Film Light – Reflection 8

exercise 16, we experimented with a Night Interior to create a night scene with a small table lamp. However, the light from the lamp which was enough bright to light up the scene was too bright in the camera. And if we adjusted the lens aperture to make it darker in order to make the lamp less bright, there was no enough light on our actor. In this case, we set up another dedo light separately for our actor. The light from dedo was very hard while the light from the table lamp was quite soft. To make it convincing, we put a diffuser (box) which was made by Robin on the dedo light to make the light softer.  Two cutter boards were used in this scene in order to cut out the light that we did not want from the background and on the actor’s shoulder and arm. I think the final result of what we achieved in this exercise was quite convincing. To improve it, I would put the book a bit forward in the centre of the light from the table lamp. As there was not much lighting on the book which I felt bit strange in this scene.

There was another solution which we might use a black diffuser (gel) inside the small table lamp to make it darker in the camera.

However, I prefer the way that we set up all the equipment in class rather than only put a defuser inside the lamp. To illustrate that , I think this simple way of diffusing the light can be used for correction. For example, I set up a scene and I am satisfied with all the lighting except one little thing and then I can use this way of diffusing the light. So the black diffuser gel can be used when everything is set up. For this task, If the diffuser gel was put in the table lamp, we also need to set up another light for the actor and adjust the Iris ring which means that we have to start everything again.

The lighting on me was not very nice compared to our actor however we were running out of time. And time management is the problem that often occurs in our shooting in this semester. I feel I should pay more attention to this and always plan things ahead before shooting.
