Workshop 3

Last week’s tutorial, the teacher gave a detailed description of the items which we need to hand over in the fourth week. We just knew that we could not casually use all the music online and we could not use the song of our favorite singer, etc. We had to look for music having creative comment license on Youtube which means that the music can be used in you work.

The teacher had exhibited some works made by former media students. For example, the “Haiku Exercise” and their reflections. And we evaluated “Haiku Exercise” according to the colorful hat of the lesson in second week. I thought the video was very creative which made by those two students. For me, the editing technique used in their video was also particularly good and it expressed the feelings and thoughts of their videos by combining their videos and photos with their music. So I also knew that what kind of mood you want to achieve and to convey to audience was the most important things. This project had several difficulties for me. Firstly, I was still not familiar with the usage of Premiere Pro which meant that I had to look for some teaching video about video editing technique after class. Secondly, I didn’t know how to combine the 2 videos and 4 photos to create a one-minute which was harmonious in video and audio. I didn’t have any good ideas. So it was a big challenge for me who didn’t have any previous experience.

Workshop 2

In the tutorial of week2, we would pick up a video, a short audio, and a photo from the projects we did last week, and then showed them to your team members and described the things you chose to them. Then teacher set a small rule: There were four hats with different colours on the blackboard, every hat had different meanings. When you finished showing, each team member should pick a hat and then evaluated your works according to that hat’s meaning. They could evaluate your works from various aspects, such as your love or not for others works, shooting techniques and perspectives, this works’ originality, etc..
For example, I shoot a video: A video that I with roommate took the cat to see pet doctor and caught the cat out from the cage. I thought this video was very interesting, also showed cat’s lovely place. The comments I received were also different. One thought it was cute; the other said she did not like cats and loved dogs. There was also a person who said that the video’s background was negative, his meaning was that it should not be shot in the hospital if I shoot at home, the video would be cuter and more positive.

I’m nervous about this link to show my works. When my own language level is not too good, I’m afraid that I can’t express my ideas better to others. But I still think this method is meaningful. For photos and videos I shoot, I will unconsciously think it is perfect, and I am so satisfied with it that I can not find any shortcomings. And the evaluation of others can make you recognize that what are the shortcomings of our works, so when you shoot similar works in the future, you will unconsciously pay more attention to your previous shortcomings, thus let you better improve it to make it become better.
In that small class, we spent almost an hour learning how to basically use a video editing software Adobe Premiere Pro. And we had to download four to six small videos, and then clipped the videos together, and this video form called Haiku. I knew a little Japanese so I knew the meaning of Haiku, but Haiku in the video clips form and in the poetic form is different.
To be honest, I think this software is difficult, very difficult, because before I have not any use knowledge about editing software. I almost get mad in the class, because I don’t understand this software, so I think the teacher’s speed is a little bit faster, so I can only ask students next to me. I think after class I need to look at some relevant operating videos, and quickly grasp the basic operation, otherwise my task may be more difficult in the future.
