REFLECTIVE PORTFOLIO

In this media 1 course, I have learnt a lot, but the most interesting thing I have learnt is about the ‘media ideas’ and how you can use research to make something creative and awesome. Project 4 really showed me how being informed in a theoretical idea can influence and shape a creative project, and really add substance to it. I also learnt how important drafts, gaining feedback, and reworking things are.

I learn best through continuous practice and structure. The structure of Project 4 really helped motivate me, which contrasted the earlier projects where I was left to make my own schedule, and I left a lot of things to last minute. Ultimately, I am very proud of all the projects that I have created this semester, but the first 3 really stressed me out because I was not organised enough. I have learnt that I need a week to week schedule, or a day to day schedule if the deadline is sooner, which I can do for myself in the future.

The most challenging thing that I have found in this course is the blog posts. I found it hard at first to get into the rhythm of writing them every week, and I felt that it took up a lot of my study time. What was really helpful about the blog posts though is that it forced me to engage with readings in a way that I haven’t done before, and put pressure on me to apply the readings to my everyday life and media making. I want to continue this practice of active reading throughout the course, as it really helped me in assessment for other courses this semester.

In terms of my own creative practice, I have learnt, as stated before, that creativity informed by theory can become even more creative and substantial. I have also found a subject that I am very passionate about, which is feminism and women, and I have been inspired to explore this more and work with more women to tell more stories from a woman’s perspective. I am also trying to identify an aesthetic that I enjoy working with, which is abstract, surreal and metaphorical, which I will try to enhance in my next semester.

Overall, I am very happy with my progress in the course, and I am so glad that I transferred to RMIT, because this experience has been so fantastic and nurturing!
