Remember that whole deal with SOPA?

I remember a while ago there was this whole deal with the ‘stop online piracy act’ that was used to attempt to essentially ‘censor’ the internet. Now that was the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. In my opinion I believe that the internet and the world wide web is probably the closest thing that humans will ever get to a sense full freedom. Although I think piracy isn’t necessarily a good thing, I don’t think that it makes that much of a big deal…although I wouldn’t know by looking, personally I think that if people really enjoy something they’d be more inclined to support it by purchasing a legit version. But then again there’s the discrepancy, for something such as music that’s so easy to download there’s no real point in buying it but at the same time I feel that it doesn’t effect the artists that much financially. There’ll always be people who’ll support the artists by purchasing their albums and there’ll always be companies that will be willing to pay the artist to use their song in a film or advertisement so financially I don’t think there’s a problem. However morally it’ll probably pose an issue considering that it’s basically ‘stealing’, but oh well, all in all piracy around the internet is sort of a grey area…

Internet & WWW

The history of the internet and the world wide web is pretty interesting, the early stages of the internet consisted of a more or less hierarchy system sort of like a massive group of trees, however down over at Vsauce, Michael Stevens explains the difference quiet well in detail, besides his other videos are pretty awesome as well if you’re into that sorta stuff. There’s a pretty cool website as well that’ll tell you what happens around the internet in the span of 1 second – this just goes to show how massive the web is and how much networking actually happens every second of every day which crazy. And furthermore the fact that the internet is untamed, free, allows you to make your mark on it whenever you want and however you want – you’re not bound by restrictions and all it takes is a little effort, a snappy eye catching name and the hope that you’ll get noticed.

Week 2 Symposium Thoughts

Honestly I had no clue how to link week 2’s Symposium to the wide context of Network Media – I mean, like, books? wut? The whole thing about trying to get to look at things differently I kind of understand? Iono anymore. Am I supposed to be able to look at normal things more strangely because of this or…I guess what I took from that symposium is the fact that things can become a part of our daily lives so easily yet we know nothing about how it works, something like the internet for example is just there and when you get down to the basis of what the internet is I guess no one can really explain what it is. To put it simply, the internet to me is more or less a social and networking phenomena.
