The Recovery of Hospo

When Mayara emigrated to Melbourne in search of hospitality work, she never envisaged spending 7 months in lockdown at home. After gaining employment as a bartender in Melbourne’s lively bar scene, the arrival of Covid-19 meant that she was required to isolate at home, without pay or government support. It is estimated that 43% of Victorian hospitality workers were either formally sacked or placed on unpaid leave. During this time, Mayara was no exception, and she was forced to seek alternative work as a cleaner.  ‘THE RECOVERY OF HOSPO’ Is a 5-minute documentary that provides an insight into Mayara’s experiences during COVID-19 and highlights the precarious nature of hospitality work, particularly amongst the foreign workforce.
