Pitching Bloom

Creating a pitch is just as much about proving your concept to others as it is consolidating it for yourself. Pitching the idea initially to Dan was a part of that consolidation process. The pitch to the class however was a much larger, more synthesising process. The conversation with Dan needed our ideas to be malleable and changeable, the pitch to the class had to be a lot more solid. It also required the production planning and a solid understanding of how concept would turn into product.

I am a firm believer in the notion that if you attempt to realise a great idea and it turns out unimpressive, the idea itself was not as great as you thought. Our minds can forgive potholes that reality will not. This is what makes a solid pitch such a necessity. Having San was a real life saver on this account as Tessa and I, whist committed to our creations, are the creative types that flourish in the brainstorming stage. It took San constantly asking the how, when, what, and whys that reigned our imaginations in and assisted in tying our vision to the song and to a realistic schedule. Even in the podcast (above) you can hear how San keeps us on track and binds our ideas to the project.

Actually presenting the pitch to the class was a real confidence builder for me. As we all explained our sections and methodically explicated how we would bring the project into fruition it began to feel real for the first time. The project was solid before we had even started production, which is honestly a first to me. My pre-production has been severely lacking in the past; my excitement and inspiration pushing me straight into the production phase (not the greatest idea). Having such a planned-out vision of how the project would be realised has given me a huge amount of respect for the pre-production process (and of San, I seriously cannot stress that enough).

obviously the pitch is not the be all and end all of the production. There is still room for more creative vision, and it would be naïve to think that everything will simply go as planned, but the groundwork is done and the skeletal structure of the project has been decided upon. Together the three of us have a solid and unified plan of how we are going to make this music video and whilst some things will change, I am looking forward to seeing the result of our planning in the weeks to come.
