Please outline some points that you took away from the Lighting Lecture. Points that excite you, something that was completely new to you, perplexes you or even one you take issue with.

I have done a bit of still photography in low lighting conditions, so I had some idea of the technical side of light, but I did benefit from this lecture in that I learnt much more about the different types of light in different environments. While I know how white balancing works theoretically (by setting “white” and adjusting around it), I can always stand to learn more technical elements of lighting.

To be honest, I was familiar with a lot of the ideas presented in the lecture, but what I really benefited from was seeing how lights are set up in a shoot. I’ve seen plenty of behind the scenes footage with lights, and I have set up lights in a stage environment, but of course, setting up lights for a shoot is quite precise, so learning more about how to set up lights was very useful.

List the things that you learnt from this experience – this could be things that went well or not so well. (Lenny Ex. 2)

  • How time consuming setting up shots are, even without having to set up lighting.
  • How to set up the sound with the Ex3 and make sure everything is functioning correctly.
  • That writing down every shot necessary will definitely aid in post! We skimped on that and found we missed out on some good ideas.
  • How to work smoothly in a team to film something, with every part of the crew doing their respective parts.
  • How important it is to log everything – this made everything much smoother in post.
