Sketch Four: Intro Sequence

There is a brief introduction sequence to the video review, setting it up like a web-series. For our sketch we wanted to see what such an introduction sequence would look like if it was absurdly exaggerated for comedic effect. Taking the idea of the intro sequence from the case study, we then drew from external videos, Darkplace being the main source of inspiration.

The Darkplace introduction sequence is primarily parodying the opening sequences of typical 80s crime shows. It also adds in unnecessary and out of place drama, using over-exaggeration as a source of comedy while not drawing attention to its inherent silliness. With this said, it still follows the conventions of a typical intro sequence.

What we then attempted to do was apply this style to our case study, taking the intro sequence and creating our own, keeping in mind the comedic elements of Darkplace. First we began by deciding what content would appear in an exaggerated review title sequence. We started with the more typically reviewed item (an iPhone) and made our way into more ridiculous and unusual items such as an orange or a desk fan.

The music used in the Darkplace title sequence adds drama and intensity to the content, and the royalty free music we chose for our own sketch was heavily influenced by this. The music we chose also adds to the comedy of the video, as the intense music is accompanied by shots of the very relaxed activity of talking about an object.
