Into the Future

I work for a woman who runs a course teaching people how to earn a profit from their blogs. There are so many ways to do that now, that it’s really incredible to me that more people don’t do it. Lately Kate has been running a series called Money Talks, where she interviews professional bloggers who successfully generate income from their passion projects about the ways they do so.

I have a blog, but it’s very much a personal site where I express my opinions and practice writing pieces. Some of them are reviews, some are rants about my life, some are just topics on my mind that day. My blog is me exploring my thoughts and my skills as a writer. The blogs that Kate works with are much more specific. There’s one blogger who writes solely about gin. Others focus on fashion, or beauty. Some are mums writing about their daily lives. There are huge variances, but the common thread is they are all passionate about what they write about.

It may be a new-ish medium, but to me I think the idea of making something you’re passionate about your career is something people have been aspiring to for decades.  And it’s wonderful that Kate is helping others to achieve that, while creating her own dream job at the same time. Blogging seems simple, but running a successful blog that you can support yourself with actually takes so much planning and knowledge! Naturally some ideas just take off, and things fall into place, but if you set out with this idea in your head you have to really work for it. I won’t give away any secrets here, as I do actually really enjoy working at Secret Bloggers Business and Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily, and don’t want to find myself out of a job, but take my word for it that there are a lot of factors at play there! Not to mention coming up with content every day/week/etc. That in and of itself can be daunting, without thinking about scheduling, social media, advertising, ethics, etc.

This isn’t directly related to Network Media, but I think it is relevant to what we’re learning! It’s important to know how to do all these things in order to keep the options open for our future careers. Like I’ve said in a past post, we just don’t know what the future is going to hold for media. May as well have as many paths to choose from as possible.
