live music i love that shit

god dammit, if there’s one thing in this world that can really distract me from the shittiness that is society and its many crashing planes and wars and injustices in general, it’s music. the live variety in particular.
i don’t think there’s anything more refreshing than after a long day, or in the morning on the stupid hour long bus ride into the cbd or whilst on a run or ignoring your parents in a really tedious car ride to see some relative who’s surely going to pinch your cheeks and comment on your growth (which hasn’t changed in the past year, are you saying i’m fat?).

the simple strum of a guitar, beat of a drum, melody of a vocalist can literally transport me into another world. and, being the lucky gal i am, i got to see two amazing and diverse performers this week alone.

on thursday, belly full of japanese food, i had an other worldly experience at first aid kit (see below). they are two swedish sisters who are as beautiful and humble as they are talented. it was at the hifi bar which has got to be one of the best locations for gigs, and we were so close to the stage. there was no vicious mosh pit pushing you so hard that you’re pretty sure your eye will be gouged out by someone’s elbow, instead, it was a harmonious and unanimous hush – a silent agreement to revel in the beauty and wonder that is the voices of these two women. later on, a friend told me that she saw me across the crowd, eyes closed and swaying to the music. it was true, it transported me to a different world and i’m certain i’ll hold this experience as a sacred one for years to come.

continuing my evident love for live music, i saw the – quite contrasting – band a great big world on sunday at 170 the russell (that’s lucky thursdays for you clubbers out there) who were absolutely astounding. i wasn’t too sure what i was expecting, a catchy boppy concert for sure, but what i got was that and so much more. ian and chad, the frontmen of the band, were both so talented. ian, a vocalist and pianist, is that dorky new yorker who you absolutely adore and chad is the slightly cooler vocalist and trumpeter who is the sweetest little thing. both were so humble and grateful for their success and really brought the house down. they’re one of those bands who are so much better in real life. they’re tight and in sync and really know how to deliver one hell of a performance. they took selfies with us and talked to us and were just loveable goofballs. i respect them so much more than for their insane talent, but also for their crazy cool personalities and hope these dudes go so far in life.
