Reflection of Lecture 3

Today’s lecture focused on editing which I never touched before the class. People can never imagine that how much magic editing could have within our hands. Editing opens my eyes, a totally freshman’s eyes.

Different people with different thoughts could have various editing ways. Using the same materials and resources, editors create divers productions. Each work is full of the editor’s painstaking care. Viewers only could see the gorgeous scenes after editing but could not know how much editors work hard.

Initial Thinking 2

In Chinese stereotyped study style, students are restricted in the classroom and they are forced to remember knowledge on the books to pass the exams. However, through this week’s study in lecture and workshop, I had a different learning style, groupwork and outside activity. I think this model can make students be willing to study and have interests on it. There is also a problem that it is hard for the students whose first language is not English to follow every specific word about what other group members say.

Reflection of Workshop 2

In the workshop, we talked about the exercise Haiku. We were sent outside to record three different videos about anything. I shot a video of crossroad, a video of a building and a video of tree which are all the scenes around campus. I have not noticed that my campus was so beautiful untill I had a mission to record scenes. Otherwise I just passed by and went to my destination building. I never stop my step to see and feel the media around my life. I like such class style that we are not restricted in one classroom to remember something on the book. On the contrary, the way we learn is that we feel it first then we know and learn it through the feeling.

Reflection of Lecture 2

This week’s lecture we did an interesting activity that all of the students were divided to several groups and each group had five students going to different places in the city to record media arounding us. This is my first time met such activity that the whole lecture’s students went out of the classroom to look for media during the class time. We stood at one point to take photos of what are in up high, on the groud, mid-ground,back-ground and forground and in our hand. Druing the activity, we found a lot of interesting things about media such as graffiti and advertising. This activity can make us have a better understanding of media. Therefore, we can learn media easily and quickly.

50 Words

Media 1 is such an interesting course, which is like our daily life. There is no difference between putting something awesome, strange and interesting things on the blog and putting them on face book. We just need to treat homework as daily sharing information. This make me feel so comfortable.

Initial Thinking

From this week’s study, I recognised that the two key points of media are receiving and expressing. There are all kinds of media types around our daily life such as advertising, daily talking, movies and musics. But no matter what type it is, the two things we need to do is receiving and expressing. For example, we go to the cinema to watch a movie. Seeing and listening could be called receiving. After the movie, talking about the movie is called expressing. As a result, media’s two dominated points are receving and expressing.

Reflection of Workshop 1

Before the class, I think first three hour tutorial may make me feel unaccustomed. However, with Jeremy’s vivid talking, I feel that time flew by.

Through this workshop, at first, we talked and knew each other and had a brief recall of lecture which had the main idea hyper and deep attention. Next, we knew how to login our own blogs and the method to using google drive. Blogs are about our personal voices and opinions. From my point of view, this is a kind of media. The best way to learn media is to use it. Only we can use it fluently, we can understand how media works.

In the future of media 1, regular post should never be forgot because it can help us learn media.

Hyper and Deep Attention

The reading assumes that we are in a changing generation in cognitive styles which could be seen in the contrast between deep attention and hyper attention. Deep attention is a traditional cognitive style relative to human beings. It can be recognised as a long term focus, ignoring outside stimuli. On the contrary, hyper attention only can engage in something for a short period. However, it could switch focus rapidly among different works.
From my point of view, I am hyper attention, because I can not concentrate on one thing for a long time. I am not good at solving some complex problems, for example: math, accounting and chemistry experiments. But deep attention is a cognitive style that nowadays students lacks. To live in a such fast pace of modern society, people are supposed to have patience to solve difficult issues which means they need deep attention.
