Please Mind The Gap

Upon reflection of this weeks ideas – that the power of editing comes from the connotations that develop from the space in between two images (clips) – I have begun to formulate a soft theory of my own.

There is a common perception of modern art  that everything is a remix; there is no original work or idea, rather just different variations of a common theory (concept).

I believe that due to this fact (that everything is a remix) society has become conditioned to think in uniform ways and expect a certain result from specific stimuli. This, in my opinion, may explain why most audiences are able to grasp the ‘implied’ messages that formulate in the space between two images (cuts).

Further investigation to this idea is required.

TRANSITIONS

1. Cuts (straight/contrast/graphic matching/ jump cut)

2. Disolve (Fade down one shot & Fade up another shot)

3. Fade up from black / Fade to black / Flash frame of white

4. Wipes

After the messages of this weeks Lectorial managed to cement themselves into my patterns of thinking for the week, I had come in to todays Tutorial with an intrigued mind. Having had just been explained about the power of the edit and the connotations that can be drawn from excluding certain shots / aspects of a production, I had one compelling thought that was driving my intrigue.

There is a common theory that ‘everything is a remix’, that is, there is no original idea anymore, rather just different variations of the same theme. This theory may explain why most audiences are able to pick up / explain the implied messages between shots. Having seen the same ideas presented to them in differing variations, audiences have become conditioned to these themes and therefore know what is about to come.

This concept wasn’t addressed during the Tutorial and therefore I feel that I will have to investigate further in my own learner directed hours. Food for thought.

This is the time I find myself sitting in the state library, an eerily quite place for the time of day, writing this blog thinking – man, when did I all of a sudden find find myself with this gargantuan amount of work due in?

Having spent the previous week travelling both directions from Torquay to Melbourne to accommodate both study and familial duties, time seemed to have dissipated in front of me and left me a week behind.

This inconvenience has disrupted as I have burnt the Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) and managed to find myself now, only 2 readings, an assessment plan, and gathering data for my Self Portrait behind. Having had little rest in the last 96 hours, I have been able to enter an alternate state of delirium and discovered that all of the classes held this week have been highly informative and engaging.

Although I would like to avoid this current situation I find myself in, in the future – I have come to find that I am able to catch up and remain active with all material that is being given to us. A somewhat oddly pleasant thought.

Editing 101 – Cut & Run With It

24-03-15

The focus of the todays Lectorial was threefold:

The first instalment was a talk about the way in which ideas, unless put into practice, are essentially useless and won’t grant you any sort of reality. It was presented by a man whose demeanour was reminiscent of the Rabbit in Alice In Wonderland.

The second phase of the Lectorial consisted of a collaborative exercise between the people either side of you developing an interchangeable story, penned to post-it notes. This exercise proved to be quite worthwhile as it not only granted me insight into the creative minds of my contemporaries, but also enabled the group to collect ideas and develop a (albeit simple) story.

Part III of the class was again a presentation by one of RMITs lecturers. This brief presentation centred around the idea of ‘editing’ as a practice, and the endless amounts of connotations that can be drawn by making an edit. The concept that I enjoyed the most from this part of the Lectorial was the idea that the images (scenes) that you choose to place on either side of the cut only act as half the reason you make an opinion…It is “the space between cuts, the collision of two images where meaning is formed”.

Project

project
noun
ˈprɒdʒɛkt/
  1. an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim.
This simple definition of the term project, encapsulates what it is that I am envisioning when I aim to unleash my ‘self portrait’ out into the universe.
I, like most humans, am a multi-faseted individual that has a number of different variations of myself that intertwine and coexist. Of course, the main fabric (or fibre) that makes me who I am unifies these different versions, however I am unable to capture all of these sides and compound them into one portrait.
Instead, I aim to portray the sides of myself that aren’t universally acknowledged and easily recognisable to see from the immediate outside. The Patrick Hills that I aim to present is one that is normally reserved for the rare time that I have to myself, my ‘me’ time.

This was the day that the mysterious and complex world of Copyright Law was unpacked and the folk law behind it completely unraveled.

Having guest speaker Anne Lennox command the attention of the entire class for 30 minutes is quite impressive in its own right; but to have that underrated attention when talking about copyright law, that’s something completely unheard of.

Anne mannaged to present to complexities behind copyright law in a manner that almost all of the class could easily digest and connect with. By presenting in this way, Anne managed not only to grab the attention of everyone, but to also engage in relevant conversation.

I would like to say that this Lectorial completely diffused any problems with copyright law, however I would be selling you a lie. What this Lectorial did do, however, was to highlight the complexities behind copyright law and enlighten me to the thin line that must be navigated to avoid any form of legal action.

I now fear Copyright Law as much as I fear the rise of Godzilla.

Speakerboxx

Gracing the class this afternoon was a merriment of RMIT Staff that came to express their expertise on the way in which ethics plays its within the construct of Media.

Amongst the discussions that played out over the 2 hour time slot was the importance of copyright law (more importantly, copyright infringement law), extroversion and the importance of prior preparation.

Having two different Media practitioners give valuable advise on the industry and the ethics that they choose to employ came as a warm welcome by the cohort.

Although, acting in complete juxtaposition to his advise, Paul Richard did not prepare thoroughly and landed himself in front of the group without the powerpoint he had prepared. This made me wonder if he were exercising an act of deviance and using us as experiments.

This next video was shot in slow motion, however, vimeo could not handle the frame rate and therefore converted it back to a standard rate.

The version of ‘me’ that I was attempting to portray to the public revolved around and average Day In The Life.

  • NOTHING – this was an adaptation of John Cages – 4’33” . It acts as a depiction of the silence that graces me every morning when I wake.
  • COFFEE PERCOLATOR – emphasises my love for coffee and the daily routine of my morning ‘cup of personality’.
  • A BUGS LIFE – shows my love for nature and my fascination in life trivialities
  • TEA – (it worked properly) depicted my interest in how mediums can be augmented and sounds embellished.
  • TEXT – encapsulates a series of texts that resonate with my inner ethos and perception of the world.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY – portrays the constant loves of mine : Seinfeld – My Girlfriend (Sandra) – My New Skateboard (A Work In Progress) – My Cat (Yoko)

Derelicte My Balls

After 14 years and countless different forms of speculation and rumours, the world was finally graced with some of the best news to come out of 2015… Zoolander 2 is coming!

Ben Stiller (Derek Zoolander) and Owen Wilson (Hansel McDonald) hit the runway at the Paris Fashion Week to promote their sequel to the 2001 cult classic. Dressed in patterned purple suit and boutique pyjamas respectively, the two pounded the catwalk in a scene not too dissimilar to their infamous ‘walk-off’. Unfortunately though, David Bowie was nowhere to be seen.

Sources say that filming has already commenced in the Italian city of Rome, with Wilson being seen sporting an oversized fur coat and ‘you can’t touch this’ attitude.

My only hope is that Jacobim Mugatu (inventor of the piano-keyboard necktie and former member of Frankie Goes To Hollywood) is featured heavily in the new film.
