Another World: Reflection #10

Story World in progress

(Plot outline):

  • She killed her boyfriend
  • Triggered “something” in her
  • Killing spree
  • No one suspects her
  • Boyfriend kind of still exist but as a spirit that only she can see but she doesn’t realise he is dead or a spirit
  • He also encourages her to kill more people

I started with my idea from a song by Frank Sinatra. I created a plot first and then I started to add elements to create my story world. The elements I added are not fixed but I have listed options for the possibility to how the story could turn out. Firstly, I looked through genre after reading “Working with Genre I” by Dancyger and Rush. I chose crime, thriller and psychological for the short film genre. I chose crime even though it is not a detective focus kind of story world since the protagonist is the one who is responsible for the crime. It is also a thriller and psychological because the protagonist faces mental issues and goes on a killing spree. I picked out typical scenes from each genre and put them together to form my story world.

Secondly, I added and developed my characters by adding a back story. The protagonist comes from a well off family and her parents are always overseas for a business trip. She is an only child and is always alone at home. Her boyfriend stays with her occasionally. The protagonist knows the boyfriend since they were young. I was thinking more of like neighbours who grew up together. I want to reflect a deep relationship and how it turned downhill. So far this is what I have thought mainly for the protagonist and the boyfriend. I have yet to add more characters.

Thirdly, I was thinking of all kinds of location. I had house basement, car park, mortuary and bomb shelter. These locations are where the protagonist does her murderous acts and keeps the bodies. After that, I thought about the community. It will be a small quiet town where everyone knows each other. I also added the hospital to the list because I was thinking more of what kind of job would the protagonist be working as and that people would not suspect her to do such things. I had this inspiration from Hannibal Season 1 (2013) after watching a few episodes. Dr Hannibal Lecter is a psychiatrist but is secretly a cannibalistic serial killer. People around him would not suspect that he would such a thing thus I thought of having a similar idea.

Fourthly, the weather in that small town would be COLD. I was thinking icy cold and snow. The reason why I want the weather to be cold is so that it will show how cold blooded the protagonist is. Also, when more people goes missing the weather becomes colder. This will make the people in town more worried and investigation will be harder.

Lastly, I was thinking of the goal of the protagonist. So far I have the plot and a few elements to work with. I feel that knowing what the goal is will help fill in the other elements of story world. The goal will affect the other elements and how the story would go.
