Under The Weather

I guess Spring season isn’t just for everyone. My main character and I are falling sick quite often for the past few weeks. My test shoot did not turned out as planned because the main character was feeling under the weather. I did not want the day to go to a waste so instead I tried out different angles that follows the main character. There is no conversation for this test shoot.

The start of the first shot is a medium shot of the back where the camera follows the main character. At a certain point, the camera stops following and let the character walk on her own. When I was filming that I sort of had a sense that I was letting go of my character in a way I am letting my main character be independent. I feel that this could be the kind of shot for the end where I let my character be on her own.

In the second shot, I filmed my main character from the other side of the road. It was a nice shot even though the cars blocked my vision from seeing where my main character is. When my main character was walking behind the ambulance and I was waiting for her to enter the frame again, it gave a bit of suspense like something could have happened to her behind the big ambulance however through the audio you can hear her footsteps and that she is fine. The timing and the emptiness of the frame gave the audience a short time to think and worry about the main character. I felt a sense of panicked when my main character did not appear back in frame.

The third and fourth shot was film in a way I did not move the camera. I make sure that I stood in one spot and let my main character enter and leave the frame. The audience will not be able to see how my main character look like even from side view. For now, even though she is wearing a hoodie, I doubt you can still see her full features from a far. These two shots will be my typical wide shot that you will see often together with the medium shot of her back. These will be my common shots in the film.

In the fifth shot, I tried to change the shot such that I did a tighter wide shot. A closer shot where I tracked her. It did not give the right emotion such that I felt that we were too close, stepping into her private space. It was not the right frame unlike the other shots I did where I was really far apart from my main character. The other shots established the scene better.

In the sixth shot, I wanted to try and see if I can shoot her front without revealing her face. We the audience will always see her back and sides but not the front. I was thinking why not shoot from the front. So basically, I shot from her shoulder down to her feet. From the video itself it look really weird and awkward. I think I should just stick the usual shots.

I still feel that I need to do more test shoot where my main character talks to someone. I need to try it out again and see how it turns out. In the meantime, I will be scouting for locations from where my main character will start her journey till the end.
