Film Review “Vagabond”

The film started with a narration which was not from the main character. The narration was an intro of how this woman left an impression on people she met and how these people still do not know who she really is. The narration was only in the beginning. There were all kinds of shot but the most common shots were tracking where the camera moves sideways, mid shot and medium close up shot. The other two shots always appeared when the other characters were conversing with somebody about the woman they met or when the character did an individual response. In some of the individual response, the characters did not look directly into the camera. While there were a few where the characters talk directly into the camera breaking the fourth wall. These characters seemed to be talking to the audience in a way they were complaining especially the love sick lady Yolande. There was this particular scene that I found powerful which was a close up of a polished, cleaned hands and dirty hands placed next to each other. It distinguished the two characters position in such a way you can straight away tell who is living a better life. The film used a lot of fade to black from one scene to the other especially when they bring you to the impression response scenes.

The main character Mona which most of the other characters do not know her name except for a few has a lot of flaws. She is homeless and goes around aimlessly to find shelter. She looks filthy with the worn out clothes and have not showered for days. Mona chooses freedom that is why she is on the road of freedom thus she has trouble doing things people tell her to do so. She could not stay long in a place because she always felt the need to move on. However, as much as she wants freedom and to be alone she crave for companions. In the story along the way she became quite closed with the characters and trusted them to provide shelter however, it always end up with her leaving. The main character Mona gave bits of pieces of herself to each of the character that she met. Most had negative impression of her because of how she looks like and being homeless. She did meet a few people that she could clicked pretty well. The researcher was able to talk through Mona in such a way she dig up Mona character and history. She felt a connection towards Mona. The impression that Mona left with each of the characters differ such that it makes you think back and forth of who Mona really is. The characters told us their impression of Mona through conversing with somebody face to face, on the phone and to the camera. The characters were inter-related such that somebody knows that person and how they met Mona. There was something in Mona that everyone, all the characters worry about her in the end. Mona was always on the back of everyone’s mind. In the end it shows how lonely Mona is and how she gave up with life.

I really like how the characters tell us about Mona through conversing with another person. However, I do not like the individual response where they looked at the camera. I do not want to break the fourth wall. I still want to have the distant and separation between the actors and audience. I also like how the characters were inter-related. I like how a character who met Mona was telling his experience to his wife and his wife got so worked up because he kept talking about her. Mona character was in depth in such a way it portrayed how lonely she is in different ways. Even when she was with someone she was still lonely, she did not seem to fit in anywhere. When she mixed around with the other homeless people she still looked lonely because the rest had a clique and she was still on her own. I feel that I should concentrate on a certain emotion that my character is feeling and portray it out in different ways such that it will create depth.
