Experimental Technique/Approach Part 1

The technique that I want to try out is over the shoulder shot. I choose to do this technique is because I feel that it is kind of a way of peeking into somebody’s life from behind. It’s like you’re intruding from a far. My theme or story revolves around social media, Instagram. It shows how everyone is on their phone surfing social media platforms. I choose Instagram because most of it are pictures and visually interesting to see it on screen. My main character will start by leaving the classroom. It will start with her uploaded picture of her shoes. After that I will pan down to her shoes and she will start walking. After that I will tilt up and she will be taking a picture of her friend. The next scene would be and over the shoulder shot of the picture she have just taken. She and her friend will walk across each other. It will then be her point of view walking towards a building. The camera will tilt upwards towards the sky. The camera will then zoom out and it will be the picture of the sky from her phone. I have always wanted to do a shot of what’s on your phone like a picture and then pan to the actual thing in front of you. I was inspired by looking at Instagram photos where someone takes a photo of somebody taking a photo of something. A reproduction.

This is a rough sketch of the idea.

Storyboard

During the lesson we shot the above idea. However, I felt that it turned out badly because there were a few challenges that I faced. The phone was reflective so we can see unwanted reflections and shadows on the screen thus there is no clear view of the photo. Even on the phone or when I panned to the actual picture, it did not look good. The foreground and background did not have a great composition. Some of the shots were overexposed especially since the sun was shining towards us. Overall, the things I shot was not visually appealing. It did not stand out very well.
