Editing

The start of editing and introduction to Premiere Pro. I am familiar with Premiere Pro so I do know the terms and function however, I am still not familiar with the shortcut keys. Now, that I learn the shortcut keys it will be easier to edit without having to use the mouse to click on every item. My experience in editing is that we should always organise our folder on the computer and also in the editing program so that when we import it over there would not be any missing files. We should also rename our folders and files so we know what the files contain. In the future when we do have a lot of footages and audio it can be messy if we do not name it accordingly.

During my internship back in Singapore I was working for this company under a children’s channel. My role was a trailer producer thus I work mainly in the editing room cutting trailers. We edit using Final Cut Pro which was similar to Premiere Pro so it was easy to adjust. There were a few things to take note when we want to edit a trailer and which you can apply when you are about to edit. We usually watch the show first to get the gist of what the story is about. Next, you have to think of the style for example; suspense, action and so on. You start picking the shots that you want from the show and remember the message you want to leave behind for the audience. We then find music and sound effects to enhance certain actions. When we piece it together you can pace it according to your music so that it will sync with the actions going on the screen. You will start overlaying the music, upsot, and sound effects, making sure that it is within the range of -6 to -12. If it goes above the audio will peak. For me, before the start of editing I had to write a voiceover script for the show. Once approved, only then I can start editing. The voiceover also acts as a guideline as to choosing the shots you want to put in. Each shot must have a meaning because it helps to build the story within 30 seconds and that it has to transit well from scene to scene. Since it was a children channel there were a few guidelines to take note. We were not allowed to have fighting/ gory scenes. Editing is something which I am very comfortable in working however, not to say that I am good at it but there are a lot of areas that I still need to improve on.
