Mona's Fairground

Cats Documentary Research

Mitsuaki Iwagō, a Japanese filmmaker shooting cats documentary. His work only has one character, cats all over the world. Without any lights or tripods, he lies on the ground to shoot cats horizontally. Without any story lines and dialogue, and the all of his work with the Japanese accent voice over, the whole documentary makes people feel very warm and comfortable. I am also immersed in it with the soft music.
Through his documentary, each cat has their emotions and characteristic, Iwago communicate with cats, talk with them and shooting them. I think his work was amazing. The voice over with Japanese accent and the smooth, quiet background music makes the whole documentary lovely. In his documentary, there might some interview with their master which I think in my documentary I will not interview their master, I want to more focus on cats. His shooting style was simple; he did not do too much effect on the video that looks very nice.

Watching through BBC’s cat wars documentary, it’s more like an interview documentary with their master, telling cats story. The filmmaker was not more focus on the cats that I think. Cats did not show their personality to the audience instead of the story narrate by their master. Compare with the Japanese style, I was more like Iwago’s documentary.
