Pulling Apart and Stitching Together

For week 3’s lectorial, we were discussing about editing. Liam mentioned that editing was more of breaking things apart to create new meaning by stitching them together… I thought that was a very poetic way to think about editing but I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since so i guess Liam did a pretty good job for that lectorial!

We were also given a scrambled story of 900-ish words to complete. Here’s what i came up with:

I didn’t want to start with the conventional introduction ( the one that we discussed would be the most appropriate start to the story ). Instead i chose a different one to see if that would still work, and if the story still made sense.

I also challenged myself to use as little ’tiles’ as possible, bridging on that idea of ‘ how much can you cut out of the story as possible before it makes no complete sense’

In my opinion, it seems pretty legit. There could be more holes to fill but at this stage, it’s not like the reader cannot completely misunderstand what is going on. There were 30 ’tiles’ available and i used 8. I think if i had used any lesser, it might have not made any sense at all.

While this example used in the lectorial was in context with words, the same concept can be applied to almost all content creation ( videos, magazines, books, photos ). It’s a very useful perspective to look at editing as a form of breaking apart before stitching together ( see what i mean when i say i can’t get it out of my mind). I think that concept will still prove useful to me in the many years to come.
