design fiction

“An approach to design that speculates about new ideas through prototyping and storytelling.”

I think I always knew that design fiction existed, but I never knew that it could be classified as an actual design approach.
However the fact that it is becoming an increasingly reputable design approach is a very positive thing. In regards to inspiration,
there will be a growing community of graphic designers, industrial designers, engineers and architects who will all be surrounded by ideas driven by the premise that the relationship between humans and objects is only going to move forward. Design fiction keeps this premise at the heart of its approach, and allows for an imaginative thinking that is more free of design constraints. This will not only serve as inspiration but will also greatly assist in direction. A good example would be the A Day Made of Glass video, in how the video takes an existing product, and examines the possibilities in which the existing product can evolve.

The relationship between humans and objects/services will always exist. Therefore it seems only logical that using a diegetic prototype in order to improve this relationship will become increasingly more prevalent.
