Initiative post week 8

In relation to this weeks lecture and workshop discussion about hyper and deep attention in terms of the Harry Potter Fandom, it has become clear to me that fans in general devote their life and the majority of their time to who or whatever they are a fan of. I notice on social media all the time different types of fandoms whether they are fans of artists such as like One Direction, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars etc.. or current popular TV shows like Riverdale or 13 reasons why, devoting their time to who or what they are a fan of. Especially on Twitter, I notice what the worlds top trends are, and the majority of the time, it is fandoms taking over Twitter, as a mass community, posting about every little thing such as the shorts Justin Bieber got ‘papped’ wearing or the new tattoo Harry Styles just got, and what each tiny detail of the tattoo symbolizes. Therefore, just by scrolling through social media it has become clear to me that fans, when they are thinking or ‘worshipping’ who or what they are a fan of, only use deep attention, as they place the fandom as the main priority in their life, like nothing else matters or is worth paying any attention to.

Underneath, I have added a screenshot of what is trending on Twitter worldwide today, you will notice #PositivityForNormani is trending, relating to Normani from the girl band Fifth Harmony, who’s fans are tweeting together as a community to ensure Normani is always happy, as they noticed she was feeling sad recently.

Initiative post week 7

In relation to this weeks reading about the connection between animal and man, I have since purposely noticed just how much I rely on my dog. There is an undeniable connection between my dog and I, as I do understand when the reading mentions a human needs a pet or animal of some sort in their life. If ever I am having a bad day, I just need to look at my constantly smiling dog and I feel instant joy again. If ever I am in a sad mood and feeling down, my dog can sense exactly how I am feeling and knows how to life up my spirits. A human and animal/pet’s connection is real, it is a comforting relationship physically and mentally. Having a pet is like knowing a living being is always going to have your back, because we all know that sometimes not even all human beings can be there for us all of the time. Overall, a human and animal connection is a special connection as us humans rely on our pets as our pets rely on us to take care of them and look out for one another.

Workshop activity week 8

In this weeks workshop I showed my Project Brief 3 video to a couple of people on my table. Before I showed them my video, I told them a few aspects of my video that I wasn’t too sure about, such as the music and titles, so I could get their advice. Their advice was very helpful, and since then I managed to change the music and fix the appearance of the titles. We also looked at the ‘pursuit’ videos that we filmed last week. It was interesting to watch the video for the first time without editing it, it did make me cringe very much. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a hold of the video we made for this blog post, however it was really interesting to be apart of, as I enjoyed seeing the process of planning, filming and watching the video from beginning to end. During the workshop we also had a group discussion about this weeks reading about fandoms. What I found interesting was whether or not fandom’s use hyper or deep attention when at for example Harry Potter world or just apart of the fandom in general. I believe that people in fandoms or fans do use only deep attention, as they devote their entire life to what and who they are a fan of as they know every detail and pay attention to the little things, and notice when for example the fake buildings in Harry Potter World are out of place.

Initiative Post week 6

In relation to this weeks reading about why youths share so publicly online, I thought I would refer to the fact that some people I know share two accounts online, whether it be Twitter or Instagram. People perhaps create a separate private account in order to share more publicly about their lives. People do tend to post more intimate or personal parts of their lives on their private account, perhaps because they follow people they personally know in their lives. Yet people on their public accounts, will more likely post photos of themselves that are not as personal or not real. Therefore I sometimes find that people use a public account to be more private and people use a private account to post in a more public way. Perhaps this is because people want to create a facade of themselves online, to pretend as if their life is perfect and social, yet their reality and intimate life is only shared to people who know them in real life.

Workshop Activity Week 7

In this weeks workshop, due to not being able to get hold of a camera in time, I did not have a rough copy of my interview, yet I looked at another students rough copy instead, and gave her feedback. I thought she had an excellent use of different shots such as close ups, mid shots and long shots, I also thought her editing worked very well in time with the dialogue/ answers given and what was being shown. I gave her the idea of at the end of fading her interview at the end to the shot she used at the beginning of the interview, to round up the interview nicely.

The activity we did of filming a short video, using the theme ‘pursuit’, and not being able to edit at all or look at it once finished filming, as fun. I really enjoyed working with my group as we came up with our idea and stuck with it. We are waiting until next week to look at the video for the first time, so I am not sure yet how it turned out. However I know we had trouble with timing whilst filming, so the end scene we had to improvise with what was available to us.

Reflection on the reading for week 8

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this weeks reading, in fact, I would say it is by far my favourite reading this year in my opinion. I loved how Henry Jenkins in his blog ‘Night of a Thousand Wizards’, brings to life the reality and culture of the Harry Potter fandom, through the experience of being at Harry Potter World in Orlando. Jenkins is not afraid nor ashamed to show how he emotionally feels about being a Harry Potter fan and being apart of their fandom, which I think is amazing. He really brings to life the emotion that comes with being in a type of fandom, and although he is talking about the Harry Potter fandom, he does generalize the idea of fandom’s in general, that it is a save haven and a community for people who basically worship the same thing. I appreciated the fact that Jenkins gives insight into how amazing a fandom can be, and how a place such as Hogwarts or Harry Potter world in Orlando, can give so many people the same types of sensations, and that how these people can relate to each other. I do believe people should pay more attention or even become involved in a fandom, like Henry Jenkins, as it gives a reality extra meaning and a sense of purpose. Henry Jenkins in this reading, does express the fact that the fans look very closely at every detail within the books and the Harry Potter world, meaning in my opinion, the fandom is constantly using deep attention.

Reflection on week 7 reading

This weeks reading by John Berger, is interesting as he gives insight into the connection between animal and man. What I found intriguing was the strong link between a mans and animals wisdom. I can see that it is obvious that Berger makes clear analogies between man and animal, for example he relates animals being in a zoo to humans in a ghetto, as they perhaps live in similar ways and think similar thoughts. Berger writes that humans also like to have pets, as those animals in a way complete humans, as the animals characteristics match the humans, yet in a way that humans may not perhaps say or do daily. Although I do understand what John Berger is saying, that there is a connection between man and animal, I suppose I found it hard reading as I could not see the relevance to the course, and although I did find this reading interesting, I guess I did not see the purpose of the reading in terms of this course.

Reflection of Project Brief 3 and Sequence Panel

The most successful aspect of the submitted work is my editing, in my opinion. As I feel as though I have come a long way in terms of the way I have edited my work from the second Project Brief till the third Project Brief. Specifically amongst the editing, is the cutaways I used within the video, that I think really add character to the interview and does make the video more enjoyable and interesting to watch.

The most problematic aspect of my submitted work is the timing, as it is just on the 2 minute margin, therefore it could be considered too short compared to other peers work. I also believe that when the  interviewee talks, he can mumble a bit, therefore he may be hard to understand of hear. I also think that in order to make my interview and video longer, I could have asked Isaac, the interviewee more questions, as I see this as a problematic aspect of my work.

Key learning discoveries I made was that I was a lot more creative with the editing of my video, as I am still new to Premier Pro, I discover new tools every time I use it. I recently learnt how to unlink the video and audio of a clip, therefore this helped me immensely with using cutaways effectively, so as Isaac speaks, separate footage is shown of him doing something else without sound. I also discovered how to use the Sony MC50 camera, which the thought of using was a lot harder than actually using it. Because I now know how to use this camera, of such high quality, I will use it for every project or assignment in the future. I noticed a massive improvement in the quality of my interview video, in contrast to the Project Brief 2, as I only used my phone to film Project Brief 2, and the contrast in the quality of the footage is huge, and this gives the interview footage a more professional side to it.

Learning more about how to effectively use titles and text throughout the video this time round was also helpful, as instead of using plan simple text with a black background, I have placed the title onto of the footage with some fade in affects, in a blue and kids- like font. Therefore this change in font and colour, offers the video more of a childish like mood, which is the mood I am going for in this interview, as the subject is a child. In terms of my broader development as a media practitioner, I am now a lot more confident in general with using Premier Pro as I editing sound and footage is now something I have no trouble doing, and I am constantly learning more and more about the different types of tools and affects that are possible to use to make a video appear more professional.

Workshop Activity week 6

In this weeks activity, we focused on the idea of filming or taking footage using one long shot. After given the theme, misunderstanding, this video is what my group and I came up with, we are not sure if the theme ‘misunderstanding’ was very evident, yet we achieved the idea of using the long shot, without editing (apart from taking out the sound).
