I reflect …

so I wanted to reflect a bit on the process of how I though the semester went and how I found all the work etc.

I think for starters the overall and final project I feel like I didn’t quite get the opportunity to fully explore what I wanted or actually create something. The final group project for me became a bit confusing, I didn’t actually end up shooting the script nor did I really play a huge part in the creation of the video.

If I had a bit more time I would have really loved to create a small video of really cinematic shots, but in the end I didn’t have enough time or resources such as actors or equipment to create this by myself. So I think all in all I would’ve like to have come out of this studio with a nice little video of sorts that I worked on with other people and had a large contribution too.

Nonetheless I though the studio itself was really great, I loved the class exercises this actually really developed my skills and the way I look at shooting a shot. I really enjoyed taking the time to work with the others in the class to create really short little clips of different styles of editing, lighting, shot construction and angles this was really exciting and worth while for me. This is probably the biggest thing I took out of this studio, regardless of not having a final piece so to say I can really take away from all the different videos I have been able to shoot and edit.

I also really enjoyed looking at particular shots or sequences shown by Paul in class, it was nice to see how films are edited together and to actually create how it was put together. It was also nice to see what didn’t work in clips that we were shown and to figure out why the flow was a bit off. This again was super super useful in how to construct shots and how to create a rhythm in editing.

Overall I think I will really take a great benefit from the class structure we had, learning through doing little videos and watching them back. This was the most valuable thing for me regardless of the assessments I will be abel to take this into my own video creation which in all honesty was my aim for this studio in the first place.

I absolutely loved watching what other people have shot, I think this was super engaging and exciting to see how different everyones style and vision is as well as creating something really stunning cinematically. SO even just from watching what my classmates created was really worthwhile to learn from them and see how they created something as well as knowing the journey they took. Often their pitch and where they started from was so far off from what they ended up with which I think is really cool and probably the point of this studio.

for myself I wish I perhaps pushed a bit more on creating content even if it was just on my own, of unrelated things. I really love taking the time to create a beautiful shot and editing things together so looking back I would’ve wanted to perhaps set up more trial shoots to play around with.

all in all this semester has been really great, a little stressful and confusing at times but I can definitely say i can take away learning about lighting, three point light setup, over the shoulder conversation shots, focus pulls, colour correction, shot construction, the importance of audio and only shooting a shot if it looks perfect.
