Shoot first edit

So I created this short little snippet of a video very last minute in one day, my aim was to take a part of the script and try and create a really well shot piece. I could only access one person to help me with the shoot so I omitted the dialog. I tried really hard to establish good shots however I think I lacked with the flow.

My main restriction is that I had one 50mm lens so I wasn’t able to zoom in and out, this made certain shots a bit difficult. One shot in particular the trunk shot didn’t come out as I intended purely because of this reason, in previous test shots I used a longer lens so it wasn’t as zoomed in, this meant more of the environment and characters were in the shot. In this one however it doesn’t quite have the same effect as my trial.

I also trialled with a focus pull in the box scene of pulling the box foreground to mid ground, I think this was successful however perhaps by adding in more shots to this scene would’ve made that transition smoother. I also aimed to have a really long shot that feels a bit too long, I wanted to add in the awkwardness and stillness of it all which I actually really like.

I added in some music composition I had pervasively used on a short film and I think it compliments the shots really nicely. I sectioned it off into three components and the music matches the suspense and the dangerous side and well as the upbeat and lighthearted vibe.

I also added in a tracking shot similar to a previous test shoot, I really like how the camera in the last garden section moves with the character and the object, it really pulls focus and allows viewers to feel more engaged within the scene.

I also experimented a little with colour grading giving it a bit more vibrancy and dramatics. I think the shot with the box and the window was hard to light because of the strong backlight so it was hard to get the subject exposed correctly without completely blowing out the background.

overall though with the resources I had Im happy with what was produced I think it’d be interesting to see if I had a bit more time and was able to plan thoroughly, I think I would’ve created a really nice sequence.
