WRITTEN BRIEF (A RELATIONAL POTRAIT) VID 3

So we didn’t need to write a brief on this third and final film but I thought Id make a small comment. Partly because my blog will look better with all three in a line but partly because I think its good to reflect on it. For someone who struggles a lot taking meaning from readings I really wanted to connect with this quote and reconstruct its meaning into my own life. The quote I used.

Ian Bogost, Alien Phenomenology

“The human/world relation is just a special case of the relation between any two entities whatsoever,”

Now i changed my mind a bit as I had multiple ideas about things I could showcase to highlight this idea and its meaning to me.

  1. the first being this idea of a lemon tree and an idea of relationally, the way i see something as a human is different from the way an object sees another object. A LEMON TREE, what a lemon tree notices about lemons is different from what humans notice about lemons. “As a human” (footage will be rain and growth, the way lemon looks and feels, its a fruit we pick it, pull of tree and use it in food, squeeze it and drink it, dispose of it in a bin) lemon tree to the lemons (producing, nurturing, growing, disregarding and rotting, decomposing, rebirth, spread its seeds, feed towards light, grips onto lemons hold, tight until they are ready to fall off.)

  1. The second idea being a series of people faces in black and white all screaming and showing just the head shot but my audio instead of being their screams would be others sounds such as a cat meowing or a water tap or a male scream on a female body. Things that don’t really match up as an interesting way to show that the relation between two entities can be so unique and isn’t the only relationship in the world. yes human to object is one but so it object to object and this i thought was a clever way to highlight that ideology.

I did do a few tests with an object and an animal which I will include to show you the concept..

NOW…

What does this quote let you do, or caused you to do? How has it (as an idea) changed you? These are the questions we were posed to ask ourselves so I wrote my thoughts and I decided in the end that because i had such a strong audio soundtrack I couldn’t go with my other ideas. So again I chose something simple the idea of nature and growth and used a singular plant growing in water to potray this as I wanted to realign the focus on whats behind the footage and the content of the words.

  1. How we see things, that is the only thing we as humans ever think about. My perspective, our perspective our point of view of things and objects. Naturally thats all it ever has been but there is more, so much more to life that such a small and condensed ideology. Yes the way we see things is important and this is a way that we have created over time to set up the rules for life. However with life comes change and this perspective allows me to step back for a moment and notice. Notice that everything in the world, every person, every object and every atom is unique in a sense that it has multiple purposes and it has multiple views. Everything in a way is a room full of mirrors, you have to manipulate your angle to see a different side. Striped back to the idea of a person a human being, when you look at it it can only ever be a human but there is so much more to it, if the relationship of a human to the world is one relationship then the relationship between humans and sounds and sound snd object and objects and meanings are all other entities which hold just as much importance to existence. Nothing is as it seems and everything requires a different perspective in order to discover. For me I will take this on my journeys through life, everything has a purpose and everything has a strength, nature has a power and nature has its on way of seeing you. For me I think its caused me to reflect on a simple yet important and complex idea, I understand it, i understand. its changed my perspective,  and in my perspective there is change.
