WRITTEN BRIEF ( A Relational Portrait) VID 2

MY PRE PLAN…

a thing that matters to me (Journal)

  • have many words listed, maybe read out parts of diary and layer them all over each other inclusive of paper turning and book sounds
  • go into extensive detail of the feel and touch of the journal.
  • film journal, words, pen, paper and move into filming trees, natures forest, have the journal in the forest.

SCRIPT AND GENERAL IDEA

sound effects will include paper cutting, ripping, sticking, paper movements, read a page of journal and have elements of that underneath 30 seconds of this and a slow pan in shot of the journal of the desk, have the silence then closer you get have words that I read from diary. Layer so its confusing. next shot go silent beep. then start narration and other shots and you open the journal. Finish as it started but opposite in a forest and zoom out as words get quieter finishing with a beep.

start with beeping sound (white noise) Lydia, yellow, lemony, golden, sunshine, happy, bounded by leather, thick, textured, similar to the shell of a tortoise, words, quotes, notes, inspirational, photos, thoughts, feelings, emotions, personal, escape, a space, its own entity. pen, paper, colour, paper, thin, dry, valuable, soft, cutting, originates from trees, wood, nurtured, growth, rising, heading towards sunshine, grows, the elements, life, nature, expanding, growing, cut down processed, toxins, acid, more process, cut, packaged sold, created, paper, nature.  A life it holds for itself, its own world different from mine but reflective in its nature, originates not from my room but from life itself, a creation in its own right before I myself can create.

1 what you want your work to do

I wanted this piece in particular to showcase a thing that matters to me, and to illustrate how it holds such a close and personal account of my life. I wanted to communicate that even with this ‘thing’ thats so mundane it can hold so much more meaning and there is so much more to a journal than “a book I write things in”. Like my other video of the actions I wanted to showcase how things aren’t just as we see them. I used the idea of nature and the journal to show a linkage between this thing that matters to me, and showing that this thing stems from nature. i also want it to establish an idea about creation, i want audiences to think about how by in a creation of an object which you can then use to create. An interesting ideal that can be linked to anything in life, everything can be recreated and renewed.

2 how would you know if it has done this? (what would your work do or be like to achieve this?)

I think my work to showcase this would be to pair the audio and the visual in a way that stimulates the ideas being spoken about. I purposefully used a combination and a mirroring of plants and the journal to create a sense of association where audiences can link the journal and the origins of the journal. I really like how my pairing these so close together can create a story about nature and objects. I think you would know if this idea was illustrated by the conversation and discussion that would be conjured after the video had been watched. I think this could stimulate ideas about nature and objects and how they interrelate to make new objects for human consumption.

3 and what do you think what you have made achieves?

I think its achieved a quirky short video that is able to depict this personal belonging in a way that does reconnect with nature, its roots if you like. I wanted to showcase a journey through simple footage, not wanting to overcomplicate the whole video I used the same footage of a plant and multiple angles of the journal to show the relationship between nature and objects and how they form together. I also wanted to really pull apart the feeling of this object, as something that I so often use and am in contact with I never took the time to fully appreciate its form before. So my slowing everything down, by noticing its smell, its touch, its colour and its contents I was able to gain a greater sense of this object. From this observation I could further notice things that I hadn’t thought of before the leather of the cover, the paper within, the ink used all these items are from natural sources combined and processed together. I took a few words out of the overall piece to have a sense on flow but as an afterthought so many of these natural things like the paper have been processes and  have had toxins and artificial chemicals added to the paper to become my journal. Having not previously thought about m journal being essential a chunk of a tree thats been whipped and deconstructed with acids. I also think this whole relationship between nature and non manmade things an interesting concept and the creation of so many objects involve this relationship yet we don’t really pose any great deal of thought into it. So for me I think I have achieved a sense of connection between these things and showcasing this idea between our objects and nature and the relationship that they have differs from our own. In similarity the purpose i have for this object is different from what anyone else of any other object or thing has with it.
