WRITTEN BRIEF ( A Relational Portrait) VID 1

MY PRE PLAN…

one activity, key thing in activity that matters to me (what it smells like, what it feels like)

  • drawing, hand movement on paintbrush or pencil.
  • Nat’s music in the background
  • detail elements of the paintbrush/pencil

SCRIPT AND GENERAL IDEA

Nat’s guitar music in the background, swooshing sound of paint and pencil on paper. A voice over, time lapse of a painting and have snippets of people walking, looking and thing observing and thinking and intertwine the creation of a piece of work and people, empty walls, spaces. close ups of tools and the paper.

so much is put into the objects and by taking two objects you create a third, a piece, an artwork, something that belongs, it creates, it divides, it sheds meaning and understanding, it talks and people listen. we understand, communicate, find rhythm, explode colour, feeling depth and emotions. a rhythm a peaceful entity a movement that creates and a space to unleash a feeling. small, refined, delicate yet firm, slim and nimble, agile, soft, a brush, wooden, like trees, plants, nature, nurture, growing, rising, earth, big bang, particles, atoms, life is contained in this object. Space and life itself.

WRITTEN REPORT.

The first two films need to include a brief written report that describes:

what you want your work to do

I really wanted the action piece to be delicate and light, highlighting that through painting and drawing you are creating. I wanted to acknowledge how through a simple action so much meaning can be withdrawn from it. Art is one of those things that can have so much power and by using objects together you create something entirely new. I wanted to project how this can create new life, new understanding and can in its entirety have its own life. It connects with other objects as well as other people. As much as we humans take art, art in itself can take so much from humans. Another element I wanted to include was to think deeper into how life was created and think about how everything is derived from that. Essentially life is made up of atoms and every object is made from the atoms, we all started from the big bang so I think its interesting to note that by combining paper, ink and a paintbrush all essentially made from the same thing, atoms, we are able to create a new sense of life and take meaning and understanding from this new object which in itself is life and creation.

how would you know if it has done this? (what would your work do or be like to achieve this?)

I think by really focusing in on the singular movement of the brush and the hand would allow a deeper connection to the idea. there isn’t too much going on and overall the simplicity allows audience to project deeper thoughts about what is being said. Instead of pairing whats literally being said with the visual, by really fleshing out one movement its easier to understand the ideas about how this one movement and activity can mean so much more. The more you are confronted with images of the same thing, from different perspectives, the more you allow your mind to look at it differently. In the first few shots all you think about is drawing and painting and by the end you look at the paintbrush and the movement of it and think about the elements of life and atoms involved in it.

and what do you think what you have made achieves?

I think this overall achieves a sense of simplicity and understanding. It will allow audiences to think a bit more about art in the sense that things are not just a painting, because there are so many additional elements that contribute to its creation. I think by making it quite short and simple, can be quite effective in terms of not distracting to much from whats being said. Likewise the music adds another level of calm and alludes to an environment that thinking can be done. I think quite simply it achieves a piece that can allow viewers to think slightly deeper about where everything comes from and how creation can come from anything around us. I think it also achieves a visually pleasing piece of work, I like how the shots all come together to reflect one situation that can be manipulated or pulled apart based on your perspective and whether or not you take into account of whats being said. Likewise with the initial idea being to include people and walls and people looking at things when I created the piece I wanted to strip it back, to something more basic and simple. I think this allowed the whole piece to be so much more effective in my intention to achieve audiences to think about where our creations are stemmed from and how pieces can things used together can create something entirely new and unforeseen.
