Week 11 – Work in progress & Peer feedback

I presented my first series of photos from the live dancing performance to the class and we discussed the improvements that I could make with the lighting.  I was interested to hear about Byron’s project, which was also about dance and was to be set in an urban environment, one of the settings I would like to experiment with Carla.  We discussed the importance of sunlight and its direction for urban settings.  I also enjoyed Ricky’s project, particularly its cinematic style, which I find very engaging.

After sharing the projects together as a class and seeing the work of my peers, it is essential that I need to consider professional lighting and equipment for my next shoots with Carla, in an exterior setting and in a studio.  After some research, I decided to invest and hire some equipment.  For the exterior shots, I would need a reflector and be prepared with locations in mind, thinking about timing in relation to the sunlight and ensuring I have everything charged and ready to go.  For the interior shoot, without access to the university studios, I will set up a mini studio at home and hire three coloured backdrops, which we can coordinate with the different coloured costumes.  I will also need to hire several studio lights. Planning and timing is key as I have to coordinate the hiring, consider the weather and sunlight conditions and work with Carla on suitable times for her schedule also.  I will try to complete the interview during the studio shoot and I might be able to capture some more natural, behind-the-scenes style photos of Carla getting ready with her makeup and costumes for example.
